Among the variety of jute textiles, jute canvas is the finest because it is closely woven of the best grades of fiber.

In India where it is largely manufactured, jute canvas is widely used as protection from weather.

Despite of fine quality of the jute canvas fabric, the product, when sold as plain, is relatively inexpensive compared with canvas made from other natural fibers.

The natural color of the jute canvas varies from creamy white to brown, which is actually a reflection of the quality and location of growth.

Any quality of jute canvas is generally rough to touch, however, properly retted and washed jute canvas is somewhat lustrous and fairly durable

A medium coarse, high quality jute canvas is normally machine-primed. Jute canvas of this variety is excellent for general use where maximum texture is desired.

As a painting cloth material, jute canvas may not be as superior as linen but it is just as suitable for oils, acrylics or alkyds.

As support for pictures, jute canvas is lighter compared to heavy fabrics and wood panels, thus even large paintings may be easily moved.  Also jute canvas may be obtained in very large sizes, making possible the execution of large decorative paintings such as murals.

Jute canvas is also known to expand and contract in response to moisture, even to atmospheric humidity.  Painter's can easily adjust to this attribute thus they can execute their art accordingly.

Jute canvas, being flexible and thin, may be punctured or damaged more easily than rigid panels.  But that is, in itself, a welcome feature as far as meeting the challenges and demands of creativity.

Regarded as one of the most rugged of the natural fibers, jute has certainly come a long way.

As soon as the jute sector was established in traditional markets, technology and innovations subsequently flourished.  The jute industry looked into broader utilization and experimentation of jute products.
