When used in tufted carpet industry, jute carpet backing cloths is classified into two categories: As Primary Carpet Backing where the base fabric on which pile yarns are tufted and anchored to make a carpet; and, Secondary Carpet Backing where the fabric bonded on the backside of the forms and underlay.
High quality jute carpet backing cloth is normally made of uniform yarns with distinctive grist consisting of heavy strands of cylindrical meshy network of ultimate jute fibers.
The basic features of jute carpet backing cloth are: It is not less than 104" wide; It weighs not less than 169 gms/m2; and, It has an oil content of not more than 2%.
As a dependable backing material, jute carpet backing cloth is durable.
However, jute doesnt do well in damp surroundings and is known to easily sop up stains.
Carpets and rugs with jute carpet backing cloth is not recommended for use in areas where there is excessive moisture and where frequent spills occur such as kitchens, bathrooms and children areas. |

When carpets are spilled or accidentally soaked in damped areas, it is important to turn the rug or carpet upside down so that, as the carpet dries, any soil in the jute carpet backing cloth or along the carpet fibers will be drawn toward the base of the carpet rather than to the surface.
Also, jute carpet backing cloth can be prone to mildew. However, if things are kept clean, well-ventilated and dry, the occurrence of mildew is greatly lessened.
